Complexity and approximability of the maximum flow problem with minimum quantities

چکیده
We consider themaximum flow problem with minimum quantities (MFPMQ), which is a variant of the maximum flow problem where the flow on each arc in the network is restricted to be either zero or above a given lower bound (a minimum quantity), which may depend on the arc. This problem has recently been shown to be weakly NP-complete even on series-parallel graphs. In this paper, we provide further complexity and approximability results for MFPMQ and several special cases. We first show that it is strongly NP-hard to approximate MFPMQ on general graphs (and even bipartite graphs) within any positive factor. On series-parallel graphs, however, we present a pseudo-polynomial time dynamic programming algorithm for the problem. We then study the case that the minimum quantity is the same for each arc in the network and show that, under this restriction, the problem is still weakly NP-complete on general graphs, but can be solved in strongly polynomial time on series-parallel graphs. On general graphs, we present a (2 − 1 λ )-approximation algorithm for this case, where λ denotes the common minimum quantity of all arcs.

On the Complexity and Approximability of Budget-Constrained Minimum Cost Flows
We investigate the complexity and approximability of the budget-constrained minimum cost flow problem, which is an extension of the traditional minimum cost flow problem by a second kind of costs associated with each edge, whose total value in a feasible flow is constrained by a given budget B. This problem can, e.g., be seen as the application of the ε-constraint method to the bicriteria minim...
متن کاملOn Complexity and Approximability of the Labeled Maximum/Perfect Matching Problems
In this paper, we deal with both the complexity and the approximability of the labeled perfect matching problem in bipartite graphs. Given a simple graph G = (V, E) with n vertices with a color (or label) function L : E → {c1, . . . , cq}, the labeled maximum matching problem consists in finding a maximum matching on G that uses a minimum or a maximum number of colors.
متن کاملShared Risk Resource Group Complexity and Approximability Issues
This article investigates complexity and approximability properties of combinatorial optimization problems yielded by the notion of Shared Risk Resource Group (SRRG). SRRG has been introduced in order to capture network survivability issues where a failure may break a whole set of resources, and has been formalized as colored graphs, where a set of resources is represented by a set of edges wit...
متن کاملOn the Approximability of Splitting-SAT in 2-CNF Horn Formulas
Splitting a variable in a Boolean formula means to replace an arbitrary set of its occurrences by a new variable. In the minimum splitting SAT problem, we ask for a minimum-size set of variables to be split in order to make the formula satisfiable. This problem is known to be APX-hard, even for 2-CNF formulas. We consider the case of 2CNF Horn formulas, i. e., 2-CNF formulas without positive 2-...
متن کاملThe Generalized Subgraph Problem: Complexity, Approximability and Polyhedra
This paper is concerned with a problem on networks which we call the Generalized Subgraph Problem (GSP). The GSP is defined on an undirected graph where the vertex set is partitioned into clusters. The task is to find a subgraph which touches at most one vertex in each cluster so as to maximize the sum of vertex and edge weights. The GSP is a relaxation of several important problems of a ‘gener...
